The first DeepMind Graduate Scholarships in Africa will arrive at Stellenbosch University.

About the Prize: The experience of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning on the African continent will be enhanced through prestigious scholarships which will be awarded for postgraduate studies in the fields of Applied Mathematics, Statistics, electrical and electronic engineering and information technology in Stellenbosch. University (SU).
SU is the first African university to receive these scholarships from DeepMind, a London-based global leader in real-world artificial intelligence research. Founded in London in 2010, the DeepMind Fellowships are part of a larger company initiative to expand engagement in science and support the broader research ecosystem, including in Africa.
Five scholarships will be awarded to UB students who wish to obtain a two-year master’s degree in applied mathematics or computer science or a master’s degree in electrical and electronic engineering. Three more scholarships will go to students at the University of Buffalo who are admitted to doctoral studies in applied mathematics, computer science, electrical and electronic engineering, mathematical statistics, or statistics.
These scholarships will be available to students from across sub-Saharan Africa who wish to conduct research related to machine learning, and the university will select recipients to begin their courses in 2021. The DeepMind scholarship program provides talented students from across groups currently under-represented in machines. Learning, including women, is the support they need to study at top universities. Fees are paid in full and grantees receive guidance and support from DeepMind mentors.

The scholarships are open to anyone from Africa. Preference will be given to applicants from groups across the continent who are under-represented in the global machine learning landscape. Selected candidates can be invited for online interviews.
The scholarships awarded will be conditional on formal admission to full-time graduate study at Stellenbosch University, with accreditation of a research topic focused on machine learning by the scholarship committee.

Scholarship Worth: The scholarships cover tuition, medical insurance, accommodation, living expenses, and opportunities to attend international conferences. Recipients will also benefit from advice from DeepMind researchers.
